The world of financial advice is undergoing a quiet revolution, and it's not just about the latest tech trends or the latest survey results. It's about the fundamental shift in how we perceive and value advice, and the role of AI in this transformation. Personally, I think this is a fascinating development, one that could reshape the industry in ways we're only beginning to understand. What makes this particularly intriguing is the tension between the convenience and accessibility of AI and the human touch that has long been the cornerstone of financial advice. The Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization's survey results are a wake-up call for the industry. It's no longer a secret that many Canadians are turning to finfluencers and social media for financial guidance, and they're finding value in these sources. This is a significant shift, as it challenges the traditional advisor-client relationship. The fact that 44% of respondents believe they're getting equally valuable information from these sources as from a traditional advisor is a powerful statement. It implies that the value of advice is not solely derived from the advisor's expertise but also from the accessibility and perceived quality of the information. Now, the entry of AI into this space adds another layer of complexity. While a poll by Leger found that only about one-third of Canadians would trust AI for financial guidance, it's clear that AI is another free source of information for clients. Kendra Thompson, principal and founder of Epok Advice, sees AI as a disruptor, accelerating the downward pressure on advisor fees. She compares AI to a brother-in-law at a dinner party, someone who may be right or wrong and isn't controlled or audited like a professional advisor. This is a critical point, as it highlights the lack of trust and control that comes with AI-generated advice. The trouble is, just like a brother-in-law, AI may not always be right, and it's not governed in the same way as the client-advisor relationship. This raises a deeper question: How can we ensure that AI-generated advice is reliable and trustworthy? As advisors leverage AI to streamline their practices, clients may expect fee reductions, putting further pressure on advisor compensation. This is a significant challenge, as it requires advisors to demonstrate that the efficiency gains from AI are not just about cost-cutting but also about enhancing the value of the advisor-client relationship. Sybil Verch, senior wealth advisor and portfolio manager at Raymond James Ltd., suggests that advisors should focus on increasing high-value face-to-face time with clients. This is where the real opportunities for wealth creation, life improvement, and peace of mind lie. When clients see an advisor's fee tied to assets under management or transactions, they assume they're paying for investment decision-making help. However, with AI contributing to shrinking costs in these areas, the cost for advisors may be just 0.3% to 0.5% of assets. This is a significant shift, as it implies that the value of advice is not just in the execution of investment decisions but also in the broader financial planning and behavioral coaching that advisors provide. Over the long term, fee models may need to adapt. This could mean paying a flat fee for a financial plan plus a monthly membership fee or hourly rate to access financial advice when needed. However, fee model evolution can be slow, and advisors need to be proactive in setting clear expectations around their service model and revisiting the value exchange with clients. Ms. Thompson suggests that advisors should play to their strengths, focusing on areas where AI is less capable, such as navigating family dynamics, understanding different decision styles, handling logistics, and connecting clients with a network of experts. Unlike AI, human beings can provide counsel, community, contacts, and emotional support. In my opinion, the need for advice is not going down, and the desire for validation through a licensed human is still strong. The full-service industry is pivoting towards orchestration and broader financial life support, and advisors should embrace this shift. They should not wait for clients to question their fees but instead proactively set clear expectations and highlight their unique value propositions. This is a critical time for the industry, and advisors who can adapt and innovate will be the ones who thrive in the new era of financial advice.
